Why this experience?

Located on the western bank of Chao Phraya river opposite to Bangkok's Old City, Thonburi was once a capital of Siam (ancient Thailand) and is now a district of Bangkok. The timeless neighborhood is Bangkok's very last area where people still work on agriculture and fruit farming, and commute on extensive waterways. Thonburi makes a perfect escape from Bangkok. The neighborhood perpetually has upcountry vibes that make you forget Bangkok's bustles and skyscrapers which are actually only a few kilometers away. The best way to explore Thonburi is to cruise its network of canals on a long-tail boat where you can see ways of life along the canals, wooden houses on stilts, and canal dwellers like monitor lizards!

The boat trip is not the only highlight of this experience. Throughout 5 hours, you will enjoy Thai delicacies at different neighborhoods far from tourists' radar, starting with breakfast at the heart of Talad Phlu, a wet market known as Chinatown of Thonburi. Then we will eat ourselves silly along the way, and have a late lunch at Wang Lang Market, a street food heaven of Thonburi and probably the best place to experience Thai street food culture in Bangkok. You will eat so much that you might have to skip dinner. All dishes are local food that you may never have tried before. Needless to say they are delicious!

Highlights

  • Long tail boat ride on Thonburi canal, Bangkok

Long-tail boat ride that will be a highlight of your Bangkok trip

Enjoy upcountry scenery and rustic ways of life along canals of Thonburi. Try to spot wooden houses on stilt, migrating birds, and sun-bathing monitor lizards!

  • A water monitor

Long-tail boat ride that will be a highlight of your Bangkok trip

Enjoy upcountry scenery and rustic ways of life along canals of Thonburi. Try to spot wooden houses on stilt, migrating birds, and sun-bathing monitor lizards!

  • Thai style beef soup

Thai delicacies in best-kept-secret restaurants among local diners

Try from Chinese chive dumplings, to beef soup, Thai desserts, traditional Thai coffee, pig organs in peppery rolled noodle soup, spicy raw papaya salad, grilled chicken, to name a few. Our checklist includes river prawns in red curry whose recipe won the Iron Chef Thailand competition. There will be 8 stops of hot dishes and snacks altogether. You will never know how to spell 'hungry' again!

  • Thai style vintage coffee shop in Thonburi, Bangkok

Breakfast at the heart of a wet market

A wet market is where Thai people find the best hole-in-the-wall establishments where affordable prices do not negotiate with high quality meals. Your breakfast, as it is still early on in the day, will be a family-recipe beef soup, and traditional Thai coffee in an old-school cafe set in a bustling wet market. The cafe where senior people gather to spend their quality time on breakfast before moving on to other routines.

  • Fresh Roselle

Experience a wet market and learn about Thai herbs and spices

A wet market is the best place to see herbs, spices, and ingredients that go into Thai kitchens. The bustling wet markets also reveal authentic local ways of life.

  • Gui shai or Chinese style chive dumpling

Delve into a street food heaven of Thonburi

Wang Lang Market is the best street food destination in Thonburi. We will be there at lunch, just in time to see the market at its peak time. You will probably never see and learn more about street food on your entire Bangkok trip than today.

  • Ancient pagoda in Thonburi, Bangkok

A look into traditional Thai life at the Artist House

The Artist House Art Gallery, sets in a 200-year-old wooden house, features a 400-year-old pagoda in its courtyard. At this rustic and peaceful place, you can see Thai fine art and a display of traditional Thai puppets.

Itinerary

We meet at BTS Talat Phlu station. Then, a short ride on a minibus brings us to Talat Phlu where you have Chinese chive dumplings, beef soup, and a Thai snack. Walking through a temple, we reach the second wet market. Your traditional Thai coffee and Chinese fried dough stop is here. Then the long-tail boat ride begins. We will stop at Artist House, a charming art gallery and coffee shop where we have river prawns in red curry and pig organs in peppery rolled noodle soup nearby.

We get back on the boat, leave Thonburi's network of canals behind, and continue on Chao Phraya river. Get your camera ready for the panoramic view of the Grand Palace and Wat Arun Temple. We get off the boat at Wang Lang Market. Here we will eat at a Northeastern Thai restaurant. You will get to try spicy raw papaya salad, grilled chicken, sticky rice, to name a few. Your local food adventure finishes with a dessert, tapioca threads in iced coconut milk syrup. Our tour guide will then take you to Wang Lang pier and give you a direction to take a boat back to the BTS skytrain. Or you may visit close-by attractions, the Grand Palace and Wat Arun Temple. The tour finishes at the pier.

Delicious parade of food, great guide and a fun relaxed day

5.0

My friend and I booked the public Thonburi Canal and Food tour, but it ended up being just the two of us, so we ended up with a private tour - SCORE! The day was fantastic. We got to do a nice mix of strolling different markets (none of them touristy; you really felt like you were among locals), riding in the long boat, and learning about Thai culture and history. Interspersed with it all was eating great food. Overall we tried 8 different food dishes (1 thai iced coffee, 2 noodle soups, 1 shrimp curry, 2 desserts, 2 salads and 1 sticky noodle bun meal). Each food item was unique and very delicious. Our guide, Lily, was wonderful. She was knowledgeable, patient and hilarious. We really got to know each other by the end and I felt like we made a friend. I'd strongly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see and taste a more authentic side of Bangkok.

Fun and filling way to see a different side of Bangkok

5.0

We did the Thonburi Canal and food combination tour with Bangkok Food Tours, and had an amazing experience with our guide Bowie. The tour was the perfect alternative to the typical 1-hour long-tail bout tour of the Thonburi canals -- we got the long-tail boat experience, but spent most of our time exploring truly authentic markets and street food. The vendors we went to were truly for Bangkok locals, and spoke no English -- but our guide Bowie selected great items at each place to taste. And she gave us great background information about each dish, especially those that were truly new to us.

We tried over a dozen different foods, from locally famous versions of the familiar (like mango coconut sticky rice), to new treats (coconut pancake). Bowie was extremely thoughtful -- when we mentioned we liked Issan (NE Thai) food and Khao Soi, she brought us to stalls selling the best of both in Bangkok. And she spotted a couple unique opportunities, like traditional Thai coconut ice cream sold from a passing boat on the canal. Needless to stay, we were pleasantly stuffed by the end of the tour. This tour was one of the highlights of our time in Bangkok. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

GREAT, GREAT Tonburi Tour

5.0

I know there are a ton of great reviews for the company, all of which are true. Booking and logistics were super smooth. I will focus on the canal tour. First off, let me say Lily was AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!! She went above and beyond to make my husband feel better when he woke up not feeling great—bought him an electrolyte drink, kept checking on him...even sent an email later in the afternoon to check on him. Very caring!!! She was super energetic and excited to share her knowledge of the food as well as the area of Thonburi. Her English was fantastic. She knows lots of vocabulary so can really explain what all the random things are in the market!!! The company does a great job of describing exactly what you do in the descriptions section on TripAdvisor, so what you read is what you get. I appreciated Lily substituted a few dishes when we had already tried them in other places in Thailand. It allowed us to try more tastes. I especially liked the Lod Chong dessert. Yum:) The boat part was a lot of fun too. It was cool to see a different part of Bangkok!! Overall, we can’t say enough things about Lily, the company, and the tour.

Awesome Day Trip to a more Local Side of Bangkok

5.0

My brother, nephew and I went on the food tour to Thonburi with Bowwi and we had an amazing day! The food, flavors, sights and smells of the markets and local eateries are not ones we would have experienced without this tour. It was a great mix of walking and long tail boat touring and we not only got to experience lots of different foods (we were beyond stuffed by the end) but we also learned about local culture and history and got to sight-see a different side of Bangkok. We did not do a private tour but were in a small group with just a few others and it great to experience this tour with them.

A must do when in Bangkok

5.0

THE best way to get off the tourist track and visit local markets and experience a totally different side to Bangkok! Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly and spoke excellent English. The food was fantastic, but the surprise highlight was just how much of the local markets, canals and artistic workshops we got to experience. Would definitely recommend this tour!

Amazing combination of Food and Khlong Tour

5.0

A lovely, interested and well-experienced guide took us on this 4 hour trip. Well balanced tour between buzzing markets and quiet moments on the long-tail boat. Well chosen food items gave a good insight into Thai cuisine. Thanks to the large amount of food, no other food was needed until dinner time.Definitely an experience no one should miss when visiting Bangkok if you love food and enjoy "real life" on markets as much as you enjoy a relaxing tour through Bangkok's canals to feel the quiet side of this bustling city.
